The Earth is round as a balloon.
This sport has become the most widely played game in the world. Football (soccer), is more worldwide spread than democracy, Internet or market economy. The International Union of Football ( FIFA) counts more members countries than the UN, 203 against 190. Besides, the soccer is one of the most rare aspects of the globalization which is beyond the American domination.
Instrumented by the Italian fascism in the 1920's, this sport is often a revelation of social tensions, it is an expression of self identity feeling and nurture political vendications. It was also the reason for wars(like the one between El Salvador and Honduras) and awakening of nationalistic feelings. The marketing of the players, the hysteric mediatisation, the corrupting domination of money... But all these problems are not enough to reduce the fascination this sport brings, vector of friendship, closeness and development of contacts .
An old English joke: "The soccer, it is not a matter of life or death... It is more important than that! ". We can notice the multiplication of places for practicing football: in courtyards, in stadiums, at home in front of a screen, in the middle of nature. The sport excitement has penetrated fans' conscience with incredible speed, making each individual a potential supporter. It takes the same basic importance as the needs of drinking, eating or sleeping. The sport is part of daily life and, for number of people, there is nothing else than football. The new stars of the globalization, the football champions have taken the place of the movie stars and the show business people. The sportsman of high level is the pattern to which the young must identify ithemselves. The succession of dribbles, parades and goals becomes a meditation full of sympathy for the human fate.
"All Uruguayans are born shouting goal and that’s why there’s always such a tremendous racket in our maternity wards. I wanted to be a football player like all Uruguayan boys. I started playing when I was eight years old but I was no good at it because I was so clumsy. The ball and I never got along. It was a case of unrequited love. I was also a disaster in another way. When an opposing team played a good game, I’d go and congratulate them—an unforgivable sin in the rules of modern football. " Eduardo Galeano.

In a little more than a century, soccer has become a sort of universal reference, an element of male world culture, understood by everybody, transgressing the diversity of regions, nations, generations. Undoubtlely the popularity of this game lies on its simplicity. It can be practiced soccer in a street, a courtyard, a place, a waste land, a field, a beach where goals have been summarily fixed. The soccer owes its popularity to the simplicity of its rules, to its pathetic and scenic springs, to its quality of total spectacle which associates the tragic and the comic and abolishes the conventional borders of the performance (supporters look and act at the same time). Soccer requires a minimum of instruments: a ball, or a substitute, and in the minimal conditions to practice it, everyday clothes will do: one can play barefoot, in city shoes and in overalls. In less than 90 minutes, a game makes one feel all the range of emotions that one can feel in the long and spread out time of a life: enjoyment, suffering, hatred, fear, admiration, the feeling of injustice... A lesson of individual merit, of collective solidarity, of sagacity, support of varied identities, the game still draws its dramatic and philosophic force from the unexpected which give spice to its course and unbalance its scansion. This game leaves a wide margin to chance. Through a profusion of micro-rituals, which aims at coaxing fate, players and supporters try to protect themselves from the unexpected which may, contrary to statistical forecast, change the trajectory of a ball as well as that of a life. Soccer embodies a vision both coherent and contradictory of the contemporary world. It improves individual and collective merit as a kind of competition aiming at consecrating the best ones, but it also emphasized role, to reach the success, of the chance and the deceit, which are each in its own way, impertinent mockeries of the merit. One of the main reasons of the extraordinary popularity of this team game of contact and competition lies on its mobilizing and demonstrative capacity of the roots. Cultural identity reactions, which have a loud echo in the stadiums arena, are an answer to globalization and to a specific standardization of the behaviors.
