Aina World was created in 2001 by photojournalist Manoocher Deghati, with the goal of providing media training to the devastated country of Afghanistan. The first department born from the NGO was Aina Photojournalism Institute. A training centre focused on capacity building the dilapidated media/press industry in Afghanistan. Over the last 6 years Aina Photo has trained over 60 students in all facets of photojournalism. "We aim for a balanced class of 50% women and 50% men”, said Chief Editor Travis Beard. “From camera operation and image correction on computers through to story construction and ethics into today’s global media industry, our international tutors/volunteers strive to bring this devastated country back into the 21st centuries global media circle.” Aina Photo also has a picture agency that stores the 1000s of images taken by the photographers and sells them through their web portal: ainaphoto.com. All profits from the sales go to the photographers and back into the institution for future educational programs. Aina Photo's last mission is to find employment for their students. They have placed previous students in positions with, Reuters, AP, AFP, and the U.N. to name a few. Aina Photo now is aiming its lens at the international market, positioning itself as the number one image provider of Afghan images seen through Afghan eyes.
