MADGERMANES - in Mozambique they still dream about East Germany

Joan Bardeletti

At Mozambique independance in 1975, the country turned socialist and the government prompted emigration toward eastern block countries. Between 1979 and the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, about 20 000 Mozambican people, often in their twenties, left to head for East Germany. They discovered Europ, the extrem cold, communism, and often racism. They were taxi drivers, factory workers or any kind of possible job. The rule was simple: 60% of their salary was sent directly to Mozambique in a blocked bank account to be retrurned to them only when they would come back. When they came back, nothing went as planned: Mozambican government dithered, postponed and finally never paid what it owned them. Some of them just let it go, but other ones did not, fought and are still fighting for their rights and their money. For 20 years now, they have been demonstrating. They are the Madgermanes, the ones from Germany. Their meeting point, their "base" as they say, is a public garden in central Maputo that they have redecorated with East Germany paintings. Everyday they come here and discuss – sometimes even in german- drink, get desperate about their lost money and dream of the good times in East Germany. Every wednsday, they demonstrate in the biggest avenue of the capital. They shout slogans against the government which they are the only to be authorized to do in this semi democratic country. This exception was obtained through blood: police shot during the first manifestations and a madgerman was still killed 4 years ago. From official documents they show, on the 10 years 1979-1989 period, about 350 millions dollars are missing, which represent about $20 000 per person. In Mozambique today, about 54% of the population live with less than $2 a day. In 2006, under pressure, the government released about $40 per person and wanted to close the issue definitively. Some Mozambicans having lived in East Germany however critize Madgermans. To them, they are only lazy people refusing to work and getting drunk, using their story as an excuse. Hard to distinguish truth from lies in eacvh version... Surprising and moving however to see at 20 000 kilometers from Germany, people living in the nostalgia of a country having disappeared 20 years ago.
